There is no hiding that Colorado is not a safe place to live anymore. Today (10/24/2023), Fox 31 News reported that out of the 50 states, Colorado ranked toward the bottom at No. 43 in regard to safety. We also ranked No. 1 last year for Motor Vehicle Thefts in the nation. People are dying at an alarming rate due to drugs. We must control our borders and save our streets. It seems like every day we hear about or see shootings on television and then just carry on with our day. We fail to react and ignore the warnings and crises until we become victims ourselves and then demand accountability. We have come to believe in society that this is the new normal and that criminals who commit these crimes are victims as well and to punish them is inhuman. What direction are we headed to? We don't properly tackle these things offensively, just to push the blame narrative and be reactive instead of proactive.
As a law enforcement officer, I see firsthand how the revolving door in our criminal justice system is failing us. Criminals are caught by police and then released on the streets. Legislators praise themselves for passing harsher laws and penalties as they carry on their day but fail to see the reasons why nothing changes. We can make the harshest penalties but if our prosecutors fail to prosecute, it is just another Band-Aid/bill verbiage to satisfy citizen cry for a response.
I as your representative will hold our State Governor and Attorney General accountable for the rising crime in our state. When I say accountable, I mean to address the citizens of this state for the reason no action has been done on their level to address these circumstances which allow our citizens to become recurring victims in their revolving door. Our state attorney has failed to enforce prosecution by abiding by the governor's minimizing and making our prisons into summer camps instead of a place to reflect on their crimes. By not prosecuting, criminals are not held accountable and crime repeats over again. In 2012 our prison system had a population of around 24,000 and now around 16,000. Over that time frame, how much do you think crime has risen?
I do not want to see prisons all over the state but what I do want is to hold criminals accountable and to make Colorado a top 5 state again.
